There will be a work party at Rutland on the weekend May 10th. I sent out emails to everyone with the details. The new Bylaws that were voted in by the members at the spring meeting are now on the VHGA website. (http://vhga.org/management/by_laws.htm)Glad that's done. Also there were 2 new Ascutney apostles unanimously voted in at the meeting, Stephan Pfammatter and John Gallagher, all the other Apostles remain as is and all are listed on the website. (http://vhga.org/sites/apostles.html) .Next we'll will be working on a date to bring Rutland up to snuff. will keep you posted. The new Bylaws that were voted in by the members at the spring meeting It was a beautiful day at Morningside Saturday. A bunch of us got some flying and practice in and a few had some lengthy flights. There was a nice cookout with everything from steak and chicken to watermelon. The meeting was very well attended and lasted 2 hours. Discussions on our sites, the budget and the Bylaws were the basic topics. The members voted in a few tweaks to the bylaws, but since the Bylaws committee working with the members suggestions did such a good job there wasn’t a lot to change. The meeting minutes and the New Bylaws will be posted on our website and emailed to the current members when everything is typed up all proper like. I want to thank the Members who participated in the meeting, those who did all the preliminary work in the background and all the members for their bylaws suggestions. I’d also like to thank everyone for all the great food they brought and Morningside for allowing us the use of the meeting hall. Will keep you all posted about a Rutland work party. Fly safe. Remember we’re having our VHGA Spring Meeting at Morningside on Saturday April 19th at 6 pm. No rain date. For most MA. Residents it’s a long weekend (Patriots Day). There will be a pot luck cookout so if everyone could bring something, (Food) that would be great. Remember among other business there will be a Bylaws vote. So this meeting will be for 2008 Active Members, i.e. Dues paid. An update from Jake. Right now the snowpack is still all the way to ranger station with cool nights and not so much warm weather it will still be weeks before he even attempts to go up. The tower guys have been snowmobiling up all winter which has really packed the road prolonging the melting process. Jake will be at the VHGA meeting to go over any maintenance plans and protocol for preseason flying and general protocol for the season. Olga, sorry for misspelling your name. Hi Oga. Go to this website (http://www.flymorningside.com/). This is where most of us started. It's a great place. Hi, guys, how do you start gliding? do you need a license or something? is there a rental place for those things w/ classes? can you help? i always wanted to try, but don't know where to start... thanks. Hope to see you all this Saturday at he Awards Banquet. Rob, Your efforts were heroic. That association should stay with you. Beyond that, there's been a few abortions. You know, that which the family doesn't want to look upon, they only accept. I read the article. It's a promo for the USHP(!) A I want my association with that land purchase, and the article removed immediately. There is an artilce written by Doug Sharpe about Rutland on the VHGA website (http://www.vhga.org/) In the news section (http://www.vhga.org/news/news.htm). This article will soon be in the USHPA magazine. WHo's going to Fla this spring ? Last couple days to get you comments on the VHGA bylaws before the committee closes the comment period. Please take a few minutes, go to the VHGA web site, look over the proposed bylaws and get you comments in. Deadline is January 31. No time to waste. I want to thank everybody that has already sent in your comments. They will all be considered. Ya so! nope Hey you got it wrong its' thank you Gary, not thank god! Hi Everyone. A week ago Monday I was doing some repairs to a piece of heavy construction equipment when something moved and cut my left hand pretty deep. I went to the hospital to get a bunch of stitches. After a few days I was still having a problem moving a coupe of my fingers. Doctors agreed that I had a problem that needed to be fixed. Today I went into surgery to see if the doctors could get my fingers working again. The doctors tell me the surgery went well. Now time will tell the rest of the story. Thank God My term as regional director expires at the end of this year. I am not planning on running again. I would like to thank everybody for their support and help over the years. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays Everyone Merry Xmas The VHGA 2008 Membership / Waiver Has been posted on this site in the members section. Tom, you're much to kind with your discription of my "touch-down" because it sure as heck felt like a "smack-down" :) hahaha Tom, I know you had some things for sale. The swap shop on this site is up and running too. As for your comments about this chat site I'll look into it. Dave, your membership at the Yahoo forum is set up for individual emails. Has your email address changed recently? I was around for both the beach "arrivals" and "tree launches". Um, maybe I had some bad karma floating around me this season! I must admit, Chris' hill side "arrival" was a nail biter. Scary lift-off followed by a series of "he's gonna make it; oh no he's not" reversals capped off with a "swing around the trees tip-spiral touch-down". I just discovered this chat forum and read through the posts. I created the old forum using software included with Microsoft's Front Page; a dinosaur from the early days of the web. It was simple, but too limiting. This form is ok, but it should allow people to have posts automatically mailed to them. I never visit the Yahoo site, I get posts mailed to me and therefore get messages soon after they are posted. I also use RSS feeds to track some discussions but it still requires that I remember to check for new messages. I also will not leave my email address on a site like this because it is too easy to harvest it for spam. For this and many other reasons, I prefer discussions that require registration. I wasn't present for either event but do blown launches count as bad landings,Chris H. ,Jim Mc or would beach landings with a visit to a hospital qualify Uh tom.By the way where are those 3 flights on the 07 xc standings. I can't seem to get on the yahoo page any more but I prefer this approach anyway. From a landing challenged pilot.Sorry Tom Oh yeah does a crash qualify as a landing, ouch! Let me try this again..The following is posted on the VHGA forum by Rodger. (His e-mails on the forum) “Now is the time to submit your nominations for the "Most Innovative Landing" award. Please send nominations to: Rodger Furey. There is no particular criteria other than the nominee should be a VHGA member and the landing event should have taken place within region8. Please include a short description of the landing, why it should be considered, and any humorous anecdotes. This award is open to both hang gliders and paragliders. Do not pass up this great opportunity to annoy and embarrass one of your friends.” The following is posted on the VHGA forum by Rodger. Do not pass up this great opportunity to annoy and embarrass one of Thanks Mike--I'm not worried about the personal names;yes I'll learn as I meet folks-what I needed was what you provided;what was meant by " thanks againthe Mt" John... we refer to Mt. Ascutney as the Mt. .. as for the name thing, it's just the way it's always been done. You'll learn who's in time. Yahoo is worse, hardly anyone uses a real name. For the new people could you please put names to your comments--(mt closed doesn't mean much to me) I'm selling my Aeros 148 Discus in the hopes of buying a friend's Sting 175xc. I'm going to also probably build a soaring trike eventually so the Explorer harness will probably go as well (tuned pipe, folding prop and inlet silencer), but not right now. Here's the deal. . My friend with the Sting wants a smaller Sting or a sport 2 or Northwing Freedom so I will also consider these in trade for the Discus. The glider has very low hours (probably around 40 hrs) and is located in Maine. The sail is still crisp/near new and it has been flown almost mostly at tow parks. The glider handles great under power, but I want something slow that I can also use with a trike (sport 2 175 or sting 175) We're looking into XC awards. If you get a chance read Rogers post on the VHGA forum. COPYED FROM NEPHC SITE - DHV FINALLY CHALLENGED - Developments in the world of paraglider certification have seen the DHV finally lose the grip they’ve held over the industry for many years. All wings sold in Germany and Austria, the biggest market in Europe, must have a Gütesiegel - a certificate of conformity that only they, the DHV, could issue. The sanctioning of ‘The Academy’, an established parachute testing house, by the German federal aviation authority, means that DHV are now no longer the only body authorised to issue Gütesiegels, the certification we all know as ‘DHV’. At the same time manufacturers all round the world, dissatisfied with the DHV’s service have formed the Paraglider Manufacturers Association. Suspicions are also running high that the recent proposed changes to the DHV are motivated by political gain rather than pilots’ safety. From Jake: The Mt is closed for the season we had and will to continue to get frozen precip on the hill. Both windsocks are down. April 15 is the potential opening as per our special use permit. I will inform you if the road is open by then or when it opens (clear of snow & ice) after that date. Generally the road doesnt become passable until early May but of coarse that depends on the weather. Have a good winter Jake this format seems great.... doesn't have the many layers of repeated reply info that the forum carries testing, testing... 1, 2..... (tried to post about 2 weeks ago and it didn't) The Trail looks good today, though a little chilly. I think we should get some different opinions about forums. I really dislike the format of www.hanggliding.org and the oz report. I would much rather see soemthing like the original VHGA forum where a subject showed up with all the replies showed under it and different subjects had their own subject line. Maybe Rob Jacobs could comment what the format of the original VHGA forum was That was Mike Holmes I was refering to. Sorry I would like to thank Theda for inviting Mike and I to come to speak to students from both UMass and Smith College. I especially want to thank Mike and his wife Linda for traveling all the way to UMass to turn on new people to our sport. A couple days ago I received an email from Lisa Tate the USHPA President. here it is Dear Directors and Committee Chairs, After a comprehensive national search, USHPA is pleased to announce the hiring of Paul Montville as its new Executive Director. Paul’s business background features extensive experience as a sports executive and marketer, including AAA professional baseball and the Olympic National Governing Bodies for Table Tennis, Rugby and Boxing. In addition, Paul has spent over twenty years working with 501(c)(3) nonprofits, both as an administrator/executive director and as a key volunteer/board member. “I am excited about the future of USHPA and the sports of Hang Gliding and Paragliding. I look forward to working with the Board of Directors, committees and staff as we take the organization to the next level. As a national association, we will do whatever we can to deliver the superior service that all of our members and constituents expect and deserve.” A thirty-one-year resident of Southern Colorado, Paul has lives in Manitou Springs with his two school-age children. He enjoys current events, public radio, music, wildlife, food/cooking, hiking and sports in general. The interview team was impressed with Paul's enthusiasm, his research into our organization and sports, as well as his innovative ideas on marketing the sports of hang gliding and paragliding. Paul will start on November 1st. Please join me in welcoming him to our organization. John, nice pictures. Greg, Mike, the OZ page uses a BBS (bulletin board system) program called phpBB 2.0.22 and it is free and I can install it no problem. But this should not replace a chat line only supplement it. I have not logged into yahoo's version yet, it is the same thing right? It looks like hanggliding.org uses similar software if you drill into their forums, but they organize their opening pages differently... A bit difficult to navigate, I think. So here is a good example of a site that many of us are familiar with: http://ozreport.com/forum/. I like the way topics are organized, how the threads show how many posts for each and the date of the last, etc... I don't like the pictures with the users and it is difficult to see on a blackberry, but maybe we can tweak it. I think I have actually seen better, so I'll continue to look. One good thing about the grouping is that you could have some well organized sections, like: -Club News -Flying Plans/Flying Stories -Political BS -General Bitching And of course the moderator should have the ability to move a thread to the correct place, if it's been posted elsewhere. You get where I am going... ;-) You know, i meant to mention... Nice job setting this up. I like the idea, and the initiative, and the lack of clutter! Hey Greg, Works for me. I would like to hear any input regarding setting up this site. Hi Greg, I'm game. Can you show me a site that is doing it so I can get a look at what you are looking for? Hmmm... This looks strangely familiar, Mike... Since we are chatting, I would be psyched to see us move away from Yahoo and potentially back to an authenticated area on vhga.org. The thing that I would really like to see in our forum is a nice "threading" feature (where the threads stay separate) like I have seen on some other sites. Thoughts? Let's chat. Hi Vermon, not a who but a what... like the sign says "We are a group of hang gliding and paragliding pilots that enjoy the beautiful skies of Vermont"! Do you need info on where to go to learn to become a Hang Glider or Paraglider pilot? Welcome to the new VHGA chat line. Who is the Vermont Hang Gliding club? Welcome all to a new VHGA local chat line! I was asked to put this up by the VHGA BOD to supplement the VHGA Yahoo forum. Enjoy! |
